Independent Diving
Independent Diving
The purpose of this course is to expand the skills and knowledge of the diver
to make a safe dive without the direct assistance of a buddy. Also what kind of
equipment is necessary for performance and safety and how it is used. Divers
like photographers and diveleaders often find themselves in situations in which
they have to fully depend on their own skills and equipment while buddies are
very inexperienced and/or are not available at all. Being prepared to fully rely on
yourself provides safer divers and diveleaders. In the end, every student should
understand that in dependent diving is just as save as diving with an experienced
buddy.

Independent Diving
Independent Diving is not meant to encourage you to dive alone in
general as diving is a partner sports. Diving in a team is much more fun and
absolutely more safe than diving independently. However there might be
circumstances where divers need to react independently due to no buddy
being around and preparing you for such a situation is the reason of this
program.)
SSI has always and still absolutely recommends to never dive alone for
safety reasons!
The SSI Independent Diver program is generally not available for Junior
Divers and can only be taken by individuals older than 18 years, because a
proper judgment and responsibility level is needed in diving independently.
