High-Pressure Cylinder Safety: Know Your Aluminum Cylinders

Divers often ask about the safety of cylinders acquired from secondary markets, such as garage sales. It is critical to understand the history and manufacturing of these cylinders to ensure they are safe for SCUBA diving and to avoid investing in equipment that cannot be serviced or filled.

So, it is essential to distinguish between aluminum cylinders that are safe for high-pressure use and those that are prone to cracking due to poor alloys.

GOOD Cylinders (Safe for High-Pressure):

  1. Catalina cylinders (including those marked M4002).

  2. Luxfer cylinders manufactured in 6/1988 and newer.

All GOOD cylinders must have a current Hydro and VIP prior to filling.

BAD Cylinders (Unsafe for High-Pressure):

  1. Luxfer cylinders manufactured in 5/1988 and older.

  2. All Walter Kiddie cylinders.

Cylinders in the BAD category should not be used for high pressure; instead, they should be repurposed for DIY projects like making table lamps.

Understanding these classifications is only the first step in ensuring your equipment is safe and ready for your next adventure. If you have questions about a specific cylinder, please contact Florida Springs Scuba Dive Center for expert guidance.
